Treasurer Brenda Oppert asked for an update on membership. Question was referred to Pieter Berendsen (not in attendance). Larry Skelton provided the updated report on the KAS website from Sam Leung. Activity level for 2003 is about the same as 2002 and up over 2000-2001. The date for the 2004 joint meeting with the Missouri Academy of Sciences was stated to be April 16-17, at Rockhurst College in Kansas City, Missouri. Larry Skelton presented the draft of a letter to be sent to all college and university science departments promoting the Kansas Academy of Science. The letter was discussed. James Taylor recommended that the letter not be sent to community colleges. Larry Skelton shared a letter from Lee Benson regarding fund raising activities. David Saunders noted that the Fall Transactions were in press and would soon be available. He also indicated that the new format and editing process was working well. Brenda Oppert provided the treasurer’s report: KAS has a total of $44,351 in checking and savings accounts after being transferred from the previous treasurer. Brenda indicated that some further re-allocation of the funds was desirable because most of the money (~$35,500) was still in the checking account) David Saunders made a motion to fund a scholarship and/or grant to increase interest in membership in the KAS. Motion was tabled for discussion and will be studied further. Brenda Oppert reported on plans for the 2004 meeting and provided a summary of the joint planning meeting that had been held in September. The next meeting for the KAS/MAS planning team is scheduled for January 17 in Warrensburg, MO. Larry Skelton said he would check on the possibility of having the 2005 Kansas Academy of Science Meeting (April 1-2?) in Wichita. If so, it is possible that the event could be held as joint meeting with the Junior Academy of Science. The meeting place for the 2006 meeting is undecided. A proposed list of KAS Distinguished Speakers for 2004 was presented and discussed. The list included: George Potts (Environment), Mike Everhart (Paleontology), Steve Timmy (Ethno-botany), Rolf Mendell (Anthropology), Doug Olmacher (Engineering geology) and Pers Jensen (Forensic anthropology). Meeting adjourned at 7:30 PM. Respectfully submitted, Mike Everhart Vice-President / Recording Secretary |
