President Calvin Cink called the meeting to order at 4:00 p.m. Council members in attendance were Rex Buchanan, Mike Everhart, Scott Kardel, Craig Freeman, Brenda Oppert, and Laurie Robbins.
Voted to declare vacant the position of Susan Orsbon as Councilor at Large for 2001 (Section 3, Article 3, has not attended 3 consecutive council meetings) and to ask James E. Taylor to fill the position for the remainder of 2001.
Election of officers - Rex will coordinate a mailing for the ballot to be submitted for Larry Skelton as Vice President and James Triplett as Councilor at Large for 2003.
The Secretary's report on membership was submitted.
The Treasurer's report was submitted. Rex and and Jan Barton will make a request to the Kansas legislature for a refund of taxes paid on the Transactions. Suggested uses for the tax refund would be scholarships for student presentations, additional support for the KJAS, grants in aid of research, or to supplement page charges for students or first time contributors to the Transactions. However, Rex was not optimistic that a refund would be issued.
The annual KJAS meeting is scheduled for May 3, 2001, and judges are being solicited. KJAS is sponsoring Laura Seger of Blue Valley North High School to attend the KJAS meeting in San Franscisco, CA, February 14-18. KJAS now has a website: http://webs.wichita.edu/kjas.

The first issue of KAS Transactions for 2001 is in press.
The Webmaster's report was submitted.
The Strategic Planning Committee will send out the long-range planning questionnaire by mail and by listserve.
A letter to science clubs in the state of Kansas has been drafted. Brenda will put together a list of organizations and send to Rex for distribution.
Locations are being discussed for the Fall field trip. Craig and Rex will provide more information at the Annual Meeting in April in Lawrence.
Rex will talk with Jim Aber about organizing the Distinguished Lecture series, to be announced a the Annual meeting. Craig also volunteered to help.
A joint annual meeting with the Missouri Academy of Sciences at Rockhurst University in Kansas City was proposed for 2003, in the 2nd or 3rd weekend of April. Paul Adams is organizing the meeting in Hays for 2002.
An announcement for the Annual Meeting will be sent on the Listserve, and members will be urged to post the meeting notice and promote the meeting.
