Minutes of the Kansas Academy of Science Council Meeting

January 25, 2002, Emporia State University

Present at the meting were Calvin Cink, Dave Saunders, Scott Kardel, Pieter Berendsen, Laurie Robbins, Mike Everhart, George Potts, Sam Leung, James Taylor, Greg Ligett, James Triplet and Brenda Oppert.

The minutes of the September 28 meeting were approved.

A treasurer's report was sent by Janice Barton. Income in 2001 exceeded expenditures in part because of some income, which may not be repeated in the future. For probably the first time, income exceeded $25,000, which will require the KAS to submit a tax statement to the IRS. The report was approved.

Pieter Berendsen reported that the current membership stands at 215.

Scott Kardel reported that Kansas Junior Academy of Science will spend $1,000 to send Leslie Smith of Trailridge Middle School to Boston to attend a joint meeting of the American Junior Academy of Science and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. She was judged to have had the best overall research project at the KJAS state meeting. Preparations are underway for the 2002 KJAS meeting. It will be held on May 2 at Wichita State University.

Dave Saunders reported that he and two colleagues received an Eisenhower Grant to provide summer training to teachers who want to learn how to get their students involved in research projects. This in turn may help the Junior Academy of Science.

Larry Skelton sent a report, which indicated that the KAS Bulletin would be sent out in the next few weeks. He is still waiting on an agenda for the Hays meeting.

Greg Ligett gave a report on preparations for the April 12, 2002 annual meeting. It will be at Fort Hays State University. The featured speaker will be Dr. Joseph Collins. There will be two special symposia; one dealing with GIS and the other will be in Paleontology. A special attraction will be the Jurrasic Park exhibit at the Sternberg Museum. An attempt is being made to encourage pre-college students to attend and submit papers and posters.

The 2003 annual meeting will be a joint meeting with the Missouri Academy of Science.

The national Arbor Day Foundation asked for our endorsement of its April 29 meeting in Kansas City. This did not involve any expense by KAS and was agreed to.

Pieter Berendsen reported on the results of the recent KAS election. James Taylor was elected vice-president and George Potts and David Saunders were elected to a council-at-large position.

Brenda Oppert reported that the American Association for the Advancement of Science needed to have a representative from the KAS if we wished to remain affiliated with their organization. An attempt will be made to find an AAAS member that wishes to represent the KAS.

Articles from the Transactions of the Kansas Academy of Science are now available from the Gale Group. Several questions were raised about our agreement with them and when royalties would be paid. Brenda Oppert agreed to contact them.

Sam Leung reported on use of the KAS website. Using the website, it is possible to register for the upcoming annual meeting.

Dan Merriam submitted a table of contents for the next issue of the Transactions. Volume 105 will be a memorial to Frank Cross.

In 2003, Jim Aber and David Saunders will jointly share the position of editor. In a meeting with Allen Press, it was learned that substantial savings were possible if we were to submit the Transactions to them electronically as we wanted it printed. They would add any desired illustrations. To do this, it would be necessary for the KAS to purchase a collection of Adobe Software. George Potts moved and James Triplet seconded a motion to purchase the needed software. Motion passed.

Meeting adjourned.

Respectfully submitted by
James Taylor
