President Rex Buchanan called the meeting to order at 4:10 p.m. Council members in attendance were Brenda Oppert, Sam Leung, Jan Barton, Laurie Robbins, James Taylor, Calvin Cink, Scott Kardel, and Curt Sorenson.
Corrections to minutes of March 31, 2000: The minutes indicated that members in the "Family" membership category would be treated equally. The statement should read that members in the "Family" category will receive one Transactions, one Newsletter, have one vote on Academy issues, and reduced registration rates at the Annual meeting. Voted to accept the minutes with revisions. No report by the secretary. Treasurer's report. There is a decrease in the 2000 income, due to no income from bound volumes (versus $4580 last year) and decreases in page charges ($2264). The number of pages in the Transactions was identified as the most controllable expenditure. Buchanan said that the dues structure should be reexamined in the Strategic Planning. A letter inviting club membership in the Academy will be composed by Buchanan and Oppert. KJAS. More than 100 students attended the 2000 annual meeting. Kardel is considering changing the format of judging so that all students can present in the morning, with finalists presenting to a panel of judges in the afternoon. No newsletter report. Editor's report in absentia.. Barton indicated that Jim Aber is interested in taking over the editorship if a move toward electronic publishing was made. Website report indicates that the number of visits increased before the meeting. A digital version of the newsletter and minutes will available on the website. Webmaster Leung is interested in working towards electronic publication of the Transactions. Report by Merriam (in absentia) for the planning of the Annual Meeting in Lawrence, KS, April 6-7, 2001. Sorenson reported on efforts to obtain funding. James Taylor will provide information on last year=s meeting. Oppert requested that invitations be sent to local science organizations to participate in the meeting. Field trip at Hamilton Quarry is being organized by Mike Morales, possibly in conjunction with the Kansas Earth Science Teachers Association. Barton reported that the sales tax exemption is attached to SB 59, section 10, GGG, signed by the Governor on May 15, 2000. A plaque has been sent to Alex Kotoyanz in appreciation of his efforts. The Strategic planning committee could work on a questionnaire to be distributed via the listserve. Kardel suggested that a signature file be added to all listserve messages on how to subscribe, unsubscribe. Next meeting is scheduled for Friday, October 13, 2000 at 6 p.m. in Emporia.
