Minutes of the Kansas Academy of Science Board Meeting of June 27, 2003


The Board of the Kansas Academy of Science met at Noon at the summer home of James Aber on the shore of Lake Kahola near Emporia. Lunch was provided.

The meeting was called to order about 1:00 AM by KAS President Larry Skelton.

Board members present: James Aber, Mike Everhart, Joanna Foster, George Potts, Stan Roth, Larry Skelton, and James Taylor.

Larry Skelton read the minutes of the April 11, 2003 meeting. Joanna Foster made the motion to approve; seconded by James Taylor. Larry also read a brief report from Sam Leung regarding the KAS website. Sam noted that the number of visits to the website was about the same as in 2002. Sam also indicated that the KAS student awards had been posted to the website. Stan Roth suggested adding a list of meetings and field trips to the site.

The Treasurer's Report (provided by Brenda Oppert) was read by Larry Skelton:
Checking account = $32,523
Savings account = $8,817
The issue of bonding for the KAS treasurer was discussed.

Larry Skelton received an email from Jim Tripplet at PSU indicating that they were still waiting for a summary from Accounting regarding the 2003 Annual meeting finances.

The issue of suggesting to the legislature that the Kansas Academy of Science be officially designated as the State Scientific Advisor was discussed. No action was taken.

2004 Kansas Academy of Science / Missouri Academy of Science joint meeting:

Several concerns over the format of the joint meeting were discussed, including running the respective programs separately at the meeting. Direction was given to Joanna Foster and Brenda Oppert to work with the MAS representatives and report back to the Board.

2005 Kansas Academy of Science Meeting (April 1-2):

A joint meeting at Kansas State University with the Kansas Entomological Society is possible. Brenda Oppert is to check on local arrangements.

Stan Roth provided the dates for future meetings and field trips through 2008.

Report on the Transactions of the Kansas Academy of Science: James Aber

The new format has received favorable comments and minor problems are being worked out. The Fall 2003 issue of the Transactions still has some space for additional articles, especially short notes (4 pages or less).  The absolute deadline is mid-September for short papers requiring little review.  The date of publication is scheduled for mid-October.

Fall KAS Field Trip:

Larry Skelton reported (from Rex Buchanan) that the Fall KAS field trip will be held at north end (Palmer Creek area) of the Tall Grass Prairie National Preserve on September 27, 2003. The trip will a multi-disciplinary activity and details are still coming together. Space is limited and reservations are required.

The Future of the Kansas Academy of Science:

A general discussion was held regarding issues important to the future of the Kansas Academy of Science, including membership, budget and the encouragement of interdisciplinary research and reports in the Transactions.
